Transformers Prime : Beast Hunters #3

"Grimlock, Snarl, and Sludge, back to back to back, in a cave surrounded by Insecticons."  That was the cover synopsis, all I had to do was figure out an angle to include those elements, and leave room for the IDW text and logos.

Where are the other two Dinobots?  I guess you have to read it to find out?

Here's the layout drawing...

Transformers Prime : Beast Hunters #2

John Barber was pretty specific with this one - he wanted to see the Dinobots lined up in a cave, with a burst of fire behind them.

I give you that image.  I think it suffers a little as a stand alone piece, but I really liked how it turned out with the IDW cover and logo treatment.

Here's the layout for it, pretty straight-forward.  This one came together pretty fast, the only things I could really fool around with were the angles, and again, trying to fit it into something that works as a cover, you have to accommodate the graphics.  So a straight on shot worked best, having to find a place for Swoop off the ground, and be able to show the flames in the background.

And here is the pencil and ink clean up drawing, to take to final color.

Transformers Prime : Beast Hunters #1

Since the TFP : Rage of the Dinbots cover, I've been wanting to do some flamethrower action for ol' Grimlock.  It just didn't fit in the composition of that cover, but when the specs for this cover came in, I thought I'd have a chance to make it happen!

Here is the initial layout sketch, the idea pitched to me as Grimlock bursting out of the ground, in a hail of destruction and fury.  It also gave me chance to slightly Prime-erize the underside of the bot mode, to slightly bridge the gap from the Prime style, to the Fall of Cybertron model this is based on.

And finally, the pencil and ink clean up drawing, to take to color!

Soon, the original art will be posted for sale in the Facebook Original Art Gallery page!

Eat Your Art Out VI

And I missed it this year, I was up at Emerald City Comic Con during the show, I hope it went really well for all involved!

The theme this year was Creature Feature at the Drive-In.

This is the full frame image at 12x18", but was framed at 11x17" to be hung.  Derby Girl dressed up as Julie Abams, being chased by my old pal, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, with speakers and popcorn being thrown in disarray.  One cool thing about this, is that I used a silver paint wash over the whole thing, and in the screen and speakers.  So, twisting it in the right light, it glitters with the paint fleck.

Monsters!

Look OUT!

The last of the con sketches...and this one was actually set up before I left, I brought the light pencils with me to render out, with black and white prismacolor pencils, and white acrylic paint.  I also used some copic markers here and there for blending the values.

Another 'epic' piece, inspired from the delicious Universal Monsters box set that I got for Christmas this year.

Cap Con Sketch

Another sketch, this one from the Emerald City Con.  I have been drawing almost only Transformers since Thanksgiving, but I have a project starting this week that is...well...humans.  So I wanted to get ready with a little refresher render.
